This is the third and final excerpt from my Modern Macrame Jewellery and Accessories book! The square sliding knot will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first craft tutorial I wrote for my blog. (Take a look here – as you can tell my style back then was very different! But it is still one of my most popular posts (thanks Pinterest!)

This square sliding knot tutorial uses a separate piece of cord, square knotted around both ends of the main cord, which then functions as a tube through which the main cords can slide through.

You will need:

– Any type and thickness of cord can be used to create a square sliding knot; from thin s-lon to chunky cord. I’m using 325 paracord.

-The main cord only needs to be long enough to fit over the largest part of your hand. The pieces of cord needed to make the sliding knot will depend on the thickness used and how long a knot you wish to create, but I recommend at least 50cm.

How to make a Square Sliding Knot

1.Overlap the ends of your main bracelet and attach a new, 50cm piece of cord around the overlap with an overhand knot.

2.Then begin a square knot by bringing the left cord over.

3.The right cord then comes down over the tail of the left.

4.Take the right cord under the left cord and both of the main bracelet cords.

5.Bring the cord up through the loop.

8.Take the left cord under both the main bracelet cords and up through the loop.

9.Pull both cords to tighten. You now have one complete square knot.

10.Make as many square knots as you want; even one will work. Here I have done three.

11.Trim the cord and melt/glue the ends, being careful not to catch to the bracelet cords.

12.Make sure to tie off the ends of the main bracelet cords, so they can’t be pulled through the square knot.

    1. A thin liquid superglue is the best thing. Just make sure it only gets on the bit of cord that makes the knot and not on the main bracelet.
